‘Tis the season to prepare for cultural and religious traditions of winter and light. Whatever you celebrate, there’s bound to be some gift giving. And that really complicates things at work, in my opinion.
This year I’d like to make a donation to an organization and prepare cards for all my colleagues that say “This year in lieu of gifts Student Accountant and her family are making donations. As such, a donation has been made in your name to (insert charity).”
I’m really challenged about the whole work-holiday-gift paradigm. It’s a really dicey thing to do because there are so many dietary restrictions and lifestyle specifications to consider. Then there’s the entire cost concept – for those of us who are paying tuition, raising a family, volunteering AND working, there are a lot of demands on our time, talent and treasure that need to be considered.
What do you think? Would it bother you if one of your colleagues made a charitable donation in your name instead of giving you a holiday gift?
